Getting Monmouthshire Food and Drink on to Monmouthshire Menus

On March 30 2023, Monmouthshire Food Partnership hosted a meet the buyer event at the Three Salmons hotel in Usk. Producers and buyers from around the county were invited to attend this first trade event with the objective of encouraging the sale of more local products in Monmouthshire’s restaurants, cafes and shops.

The event was supported by Cywain, a Welsh Government funded organisation dedicated to supporting local producers with marketing and trade advice. Cywain have managed similar events throughout Wales and their knowledge helped ensure the success of the event. MFP are very grateful for their assistance.

Response from producers was very encouraging with eleven Monmouthshire producers in attendance, among them White Castle Vineyard, Brooke’s Wye Valley Dairy and Wigmore’s Bakery. Trade buyers included the Greyhound in Llantrisant, the newly established Tintern Local Produce Market, and Tell Me Wine in Chepstow.

The event enabled buyers to effectively meet new producers resulting in new trade relationships being established. The event showcased an impressive range of Monmouthshire producers some of which were not known to the trade buyers.

As a result of the event, producers have gained new trade customers and more Monmouthshire products are appearing on local menus and shelves.

Martin Sutherland, Volunteer Chair of Monmouthshire Food Partnership said: ‘This was a new venture for the Food Partnership and the feedback has been positive. It’s so encouraging to see the demand for Monmouthshire products, and we plan to host another meet the buyer later this year.’
